Scientists have discovered an unusual link between rats on tropical islands, and the health of nearby reefs. It's all down to invasive rodents setting off a chain reaction that can starve marine ecosystems.

The research suggests that rodents may have a bigger impact on reef growth than previously thought. The authors are now urging governments to consider pest control as a strategy to protect corals from climate change.
