Steam rises from the ocean as lava from Mount Kilauea in Hawaii flows into the sea. Lava can reach temperatures of between 700 and 1200 degrees celsius. Kilauea is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaii and has been erupting continuously since 1983. Hawaii is part of the 'Ring of Fire', a 40,000km horseshoe shape in the Pacific Ocean which is home to 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. The volcanos are regarded with affection by locals, although Hawaiians are rather less keen on the volcanic fog that occasionally blankets the island.
