Melaka Art and Performance Festival (MAPFest) is an innovative contemporary festival, featuring dance, performance art, visual art, film and music. In a short space of time since its inception in 2009, MAPFest has grown to present over 70 international artists from over 10 countries performing at Melaka’s world heritage sites. MAP takes a festival model that is bold and create platforms for site-specific performances and installations for the independent artists.
The festival brings innovative, cutting edge art performances and work to the public across all potential socio-economic devides, mapping the heart and pysche. All roads lead to a place that inspires artists to create work that is shaped by the surrounds of Melaka – it is the buzz of Jonker St at night, the whirl of the becak, the curiosity of stray cats, the famous local food and the river of time flowing through the heart of this place. To many MAP artists, Melaka is spiritual, it is a place where we make a pilgrimage from all corners of the globe, to collaborate, exchange ideas, inspire, be inspired and create.
Transformation through the creative drive remains the central inspiration for the festival, connecting both to the foundation myth for Melaka, and the festival’s objective of assisting contemporary arts to play a role in Melaka’s revival alongside its heritage-driven tourist industry.
MAPFest has gained a high national, and international profile, being recognised for its program of exciting independent arts, collaborations and its use of alternative sites for performance.
