The life cycle of the lion: from cute cubs to apex predators. To start a lion pride, a pair generally mates every 20–30 minutes, with up to 50 copulations per 24 hours. Such extended copulation maximizes the chances of fertility. Newborn cubs are helpless and have to follow their mothers at all times. They begin participating in kills by 11 months but cannot survive on their own until they reach two years old.
