Japan's Emperor Naruhito has formally proclaimed his ascension to the throne at an elaborate ceremony attended by dignitaries from around the world. Naruhito pledged to fulfil his duty as a symbol of the state at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The new emperor took the title earlier this year after the abdication of his father Akihito. Naruhito is the latest emperor in the world's oldest hereditary monarchy. The ceremony cements his transition to the throne. Japan's government has pardoned more than half a million people convicted of petty crimes, such as traffic violations, to mark the occasion.
