Commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II are underway in Poland. World leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and US Vice President Mike Pence, joined Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw to remember the invasion of Poland by Nazi German troops. On the first of September, 1939, Germany invaded Poland: The date is regarded as the beginning of the Second World War. Poland suffered some of the worst horrors of the war. Nearly 6 million Polish citizens were killed, including some 3 million Polish Jews.
