In southern India, two women defied a centuries-old taboo and entered the Sabarimala Temple, which is one of Hinduism's holiest shrines. Police used tear gas and water cannon after clashes broke out in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala State. For centuries, local tradition has barred women of menstruating age from entering the shrine. Although India's Supreme Court overturned the ban, the temple has refused to abide by the ruling. Millions of women across Kerala formed a human chain to demand gender equality, and access to the building.
