Are there other Earths? Well, the search for extraterrestrial life became a little more interesting in 2013. In his awe inspiring TEDxMonterey talk, Jack Lissauer reflects on how recent discoveries of over seven hundred extrasolar planets beyond our solar system is re-shaping our understanding of our place in the universe and amplifying the preciousness of our own world, Earth. Jack Lissauer is a planetary scientist in the Space Science and Astrobiology Division at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. He is a science co-investigator on the Kepler space telescope mission launched in 2009 to search for Earth-size planets orbiting distant stars.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
