How to Use Prepositions of Place in English: In, On, At! / 場所の前置詞を英語で使用する方法：IN, ON, AT！

Where are you? Are you IN your city? Are you ON the street? Are you AT home? Prepositions are small words, but they are an important part of your sentences. Do you often have trouble remembering prepositions of place? ‘In’, ‘On’, and ‘At’ are the three main prepositions of place. In today’s lesson you are going to learn how to correctly use each of these prepositions to improve your English and talk about where something or someone is.

Prepositions of location are important for communicating where something is. This lesson contains detailed explanations and examples of how to use the prepositions in, on, and at to describe the location of someone or something. Here is a quick summary of the prepositions of place:

How to use IN: In describes locations that are bigger and more general. We use in for continents, countries, states / provinces/ territories / prefectures, cities, neighbourhoods, enclosed spaces such as rooms, water such as lakes / rivers / oceans, and large abstract areas such as space, the sky, the air, the universe.

How to use ON: On is more specific than in and tends to describe smaller places. We use On the most with streets / roads / avenues, and to talk about the location of surfaces such as on the floor.

How to use AT: At is the most specific preposition from today’s English lesson. At is used when you want to talk about an exact address or location. It is used for specific places like types of buildings such as at home, at school, at the dentist etc. At is also used to describe specific points such as at the top, at the bottom, at the front, at the back etc. (But be careful because we say ‘in’ the middle.)

This lesson will also talk about common mistakes using in vs at to describe location. You will learn the differences between in the hospital vs at the hospital, in jail vs at jail, and in school vs at school.
