English teachers aren't just the grammar police: as readers and makers of stories, we recognize that the stories we tell about ourselves and our world determine what we see and what choices we make. We need really fearsome dragons if we're going to be heroes.

Sydney Sims is chair of the English Department at Moorpark College, where she has taught since 1989. She holds an M.A. in English and a Ph.D. in Scandinavian and Medieval Studies. She teaches composition and literature, with special interests in medieval and Renaissance literature. She practices Zen, yoga, and martial arts. Her heroes are William Shakespeare, John Lennon, and Xena Warrior Princess.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
