The history of Mad magazine is a story of rebellion and reproach, of Alfred E. Neuman's controversial gap-toothed face, and of a "gang of idiots" that happened to be some of the smartest satirists of their day.

Mad magazine changed humor, but it met its fair share of speed-bumps along the way. J Edgar Hoover wasn't a fan and the U.S. Treasury Department once took issue with one of Mad's gags. Mad was talked about in concerned tones in the halls of governmental power and snuck into many a classroom.
