Giraffe always look awkward when drinking, they have to spread their legs, then bend their knees before bending their head down to the water. The giraffes tongue acts as a pump to push the water into the oesophagus, once enough water is taken in the giraffe stands up and the water runs down to the stomach. This is a very vulnerable position for the giraffe and luckily they get most of their moisture requirements from the food they eat
