Everyone knows that mermaids aren't real, and even if they were, it's very unlikely they'd be the seductive, almost-human ladies that Hollywood loves to portray. While it's assumed that the first sightings of mermaids were actually manatees spotted by confused, lonely sailors, the mermaid appears in the mythology of many ancient civilizations.

But without the delusions of lovelorn sailors and drunk philosophers, what would a real fish-person look like, based on actual science? We know a great deal about marine life, and we know that often, it's not pretty. So we ask : what if mermaids were real?
