What is Good Friday?: Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday and commemorates the death of Jesus Christ. Easter weekend consists of Good Friday when Jesus was killed and then Easter Sunday when Jesus was resurrected. This time is the most important observance in the Christian religion. Get ready to celebrate Good Friday and Easter. The English vocabulary in this lesson will help you improve your English and teach you useful words connected with Good Friday. You will also learn about Christianity and why Easter weekend is the most important religious holiday for Christians. The following English expressions and topics are included in this lesson:
Commemorate: Good Friday commemorates the death of Jesus.
Disciples / Apostles: Jesus had 12 apostles, including Judas the disciple who betrayed him.
Betray: Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane.
Trinity: God has three parts. The trinity is the Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy spirit.
Tortured: Jesus was tortured after he was arrested.
Excruciating: Jesus suffered excruciating pain.
Flog: Jesus was flogged and mocked by soldiers.
Mock / Ridicule: In addition to physical suffering, Jesus was also mocked and ridiculed.
Crown of thorns: One way that Jesus was ridiculed was by having a crown of thorns put on his head.
Thorn: A thorn is a sharp painful part of a plant, such as the stem of a rose.
Crown: Kings wear crowns as a symbol of their authority.
Messiah: Jesus is the Messiah, which means king or saviour.
Crucified: Jesus was nailed to a cross and crucified on a Friday.
Crucifixion: Crucifixion was a form of punishment for criminals. The Crucifixion specifically refers to Jesus being killed on the cross.
Tomb: Jesus’ body was placed in a tomb, but the tomb was discovered to be empty as he rose from the dead.
Mourn: People were mourning the loss of Jesus until they realized that he had been resurrected.
Resurrection: We can have eternal life in Heaven due to the suffering of Jesus, his death, and then his resurrection.
Prophesy: All of these things happened to fulfil prophesies of who the Messiah would be.
Scriptures: The life of Jesus is recorded in many scriptures.
Eternal: Thanks to Jesus we can have eternal life if we believe in him and confess our sins.
