Germany has again called for efforts to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. He demanded a diplomatic solution to the five-year war between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels. According to UN estimates, the fighting killed 13,000 people.
The two diplomats clashed on the question of media freedom after the Russian foreign ministry accused the Western media of intervening in Russia's internal affairs during the recent series of anti-government protests. Maas rejected the demands of the Kremlin.
