With less than a week to go until EU parliamentary elections environmental protection is very much on the minds of voters. Millions across Europe have joined movements like Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion to demand more action on climate change. A recent survey shows this is what voters want to see prioritized: 77% worry about global warming, while 80% are concerned about air pollution. 81% want to see a more sustainable agriculture implemented, and 82% want better environmental protection.
EU policymakers are starting to listen, but activists say there's still a long way to go. At the last European summit in the Romanian city of Sibiu some EU countries called for the European Union to become carbon neutral by 2050. But: There is resistance from other countries like Germany who feel that goal is to ambitious. Scientists say that net-zero emissions by 2050 are needed to have a fighting chance of keeping global temperatures less than 1.5 C this century.
