A whopping 60-70 million Americans have some sort of digestive disorder. And no matter which one that is, it can be a lot to deal with not only physically, but also emotionally. Thanks to a little thing called the gut-brain connection, the stress of wondering whether you'll be doubled over on a date or whether that pizza you ordered is *actually* gluten-free can exacerbate GI symptoms and lead to a vicious cycle where you're both constantly anxious and in gastric distress. That's where GI psychologists come in. These gut therapists have niche areas of training and typically work with people who have chronic digestive diseases like IBS, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, or GERD. Treatment's typically meant to be short-term, around six to eight sessions, which is different from traditional therapy, where you may meet with your provider for months or years to dig deep into different issues.
