When you are avid about something, it is usually in reference to an activity which you really enjoy doing. For example, someone who talks only about sports is an avid sports fan, or someone may be an avid philatelist because he is interested in collecting stamps from all over the world. It also means to have a strong craving or a greed for something, like a person can be avid for success.
As the word avid describes someone to be interested in or enthusiastic about something, it is an adjective.
