THE STORY ...
Billschannel viewer Joe Avila sent me a super tough “real or fake” video the other day.
It called crocodile attacks human and it’s only 14 seconds long, but is just long enough to show an unlucky man trying to outrun a crocodile...
….but is this video real? Or is it fake? That’s what Joe wants to know.
I began by looking at the video a few more times. We see the crocodile first as it swims toward something. Then the guy appears, hopping, running through the water to get away from the crocodile. But then the crocodile overtakes the man and they both disappear under the water.
On the surface this thing pretty darn real to me… but what do I know? So I went out to my usual urban legends websites to see what they say about it and guess what? It was a dead end. There wasn’t a single mention of it on any of the pages.
I pulled some still frames and did reverse image look up, but still couldn’t find even a mention about it.
I even posted it on my Facebook to see if anyone knew anything. There were a lot of opinions but no one had ever seen this video before.
Ok, see my problem with this one? This is a tough one! And when the going get’s tough here on billschannel, the tough turn to the A-team… In this case, Adam Britton, a crocodile expert and Mikey Borup who is an expert in special effects…
I showed the video to Adam first --

Adam: The first time I saw it. there was something that gave it away immediately and that is the way it went after a person. A croc wouldn’t do it that way for something that big.
Adam’s take is basically this: The video of the man running from the croc is actually pasted over something else that the croc is really chasing…
ADAM: I think what you got is the original footage which is two crocodiles- one swimming away quite fast and the other one is chasing it. As soon as it gets close enough it whacks it on the back It’s an aggressive territorial display telling the first one get the hell out of here. this is my territory.
To give me a better idea of how crocs act in territorial disputes, Adam sent me a link to this amazing video from his website.
ADAM They have this ritualized combat… and so what they’ll do is swim up next to each other- sit side by and side and then use their heads like sledgehammers - when one of them has had enough he’s swim off. And when it is swimming off the other croc will swim after it and give it one last wack.
The more I thought about it, the more Adam seemed to be correct in his reading of the video. it would explain what Deo Max said after he took a look at the pre-post on my Facebook… He said, it's fake because the croc didn't do the "death roll” like they normally do with big prey.
Good Point -- when Crocs take down somthing big they usually grab on with their teeth and spin around violently until their prey had drowned or died.
Next, I showed the footage to Mikey Borup who teaches computer effects on his Youtube channel.
MIKEY: Okay so what we will do is look through the footage….
Mikey noticed a few things that made him think it might be real, like authentic wave patterns….
MIKEY - you see this and that… very hard to fake.
but then Mikey noticed something else that made him think it’s a fake.
MIKEY: the first thing I noticed was this — you see there is something else there…
Interesting - I think I see a pattern developing here… don’t you? Both Adam and Mikey suspect the man has been inserted over something else…
Ok now normally I would let my secret panel of judges make the final call, but this one - it’s so iffy - I think what we really need to do is take a vote…
Adam? Fake
Mikey? Fake
And me… well, I’m going with another big fat… Youtube hoax…
