Are We Finally Ready to Colonize the Moon?

Can people live on the Moon? It’s been almost half a century since one small step for a man by the name of Neil Armstrong became “one giant leap for mankind.” But we wanna send people to the moon again, but this time, the mission is to stay there… permanently! Do we really have what it takes to build a lunar base on Earth’s natural satellite, or is this kind of stuff just reserved for sci-fi stories?
NASA says it’d take about $38 billion to build a base that supports up to 10 astronauts for a year on the moon. It’s only a fraction of the $150-billion price tag on the International Space Station or the $170 billion the U.S. spent on the Apollo missions, particularly the manned explorations to the moon. As far as finding this funding, that’ll be easy with the help of public and private partnerships.

SUMMARY:
- To get to from Earth to Mars, a ship would need to be moving at a minimum average speed of around 8 miles per second. It would require tons of fuel, complex orbital maneuvering, and a massive spaceship to accomplish this astronomical feat.
- NASA estimates it’d take 9 months to get to Mars. Could astronauts survive such a long-term voyage into space? Sure, perhaps with the right training. But still, the rocket technology we have today isn’t capable of making a round trip to and from Mars.
- If you think being an astronaut is just having fun bouncing around in a futuristic-looking suit, then you’d be gravely mistaken! These men and women spend months in isolation away from their family and friends, which can lead to chronic lethargy, boredom, or even depression.
- NASA has an accurate picture of what you can expect from the rocky satellite. First, it has no air or oxygen. Its temperature can peak at 253°F in the daytime and then plummet to -387°F at night.
- NASA says it’d take about $38 billion to build a base that supports up to 10 astronauts for a year on the moon.
- As for shelter, it can be built underground inside a lava tube discovered by the Japanese lunar orbiter SELENE.
- n 2016, NASA sent a 3D printer created by Made in Space, Inc. to the International Space Station to test how it works in microgravity. So far, it’s doing pretty well!
- So, we do have the right equipment and technology for the job. Plus, the moon is also rich in natural resources, making it self-sufficient.
