Ashok (Sivaji Ganesan) an educated unemployed youth meets Aruna (Savitri) a rich Industrialist's daughter. Both fall in love with each other, but fate has something else in store for them. Aruna who is a runaway bride is again captured by her would be husband and cousin Sukumar (M.N. Nambiar). While chasing them to save Aruna, Ashok meets with an accident and loses his memory. In this state of amnesia Ashok meets Roopa a gypsy girl. Roopa develops a liking towards Ashok and vise versa, but whenever Ashok is asked about his past he reacts violently. One fine day Aruna comes back into Ashok's life and things get more complicated. Ashok's memory fails to recognize her. The rest of the film deals with how Ashok struggles with his memory and how both Aruna and Roopa try to win him over.
