The African Rock Python is Africa's largest snake, exceeding 20 ft (6 m) in length. The snake is found in a variety of habitats, from forests to near deserts, although usually near sources of water. The African rock python kills its prey by constriction and often eats animals up to the size of antelope and occasionally even crocodiles. The snake is widely feared in Africa even though it only very rarely kills humans. Florida has long battled an invasive population of Burmese pythons in the Everglades and it has been reported that the African Rock Python have established a breeding population in South Florida as well. At least ten adult rock pythons have been capture over the last years near Everglades National Park, as well as rock python hatchlings have been spotted and captured. Wildlife experts fear that the burmese pythons might interbred with African rock pythons, which subsequently might produce a highly aggressive and dangerous “super python”. According to local wildlife experts, the rock python is "bigger and meaner than the Burmese python." Which is why fears are stirring high that a hybrid python may be on the rise in the Everglades.
In Africa, the rock python has a notorious reputation for feeding on large creatures as pigs, goats, antelopes and crocodiles. There also have been cases reported of rock pythons attacking and killing humans but such incidents are rare. A Ugandan newspaper reported in 1951 that a 13-year-old boy was swallowed, but the python was forced to disgorge the body. In 1973, a Portuguese soldier was discovered in the stomach of a snake. In 1979, a 14.9 ft python killed a 13-year-old boy. In Carlyle, Illinois in the summer of 1999 a 3-year-old boy was suffocated in his sleep by an escaped 7.5 ft specimen. In South Africa, In 2002, a 10-year-old child was eaten by a rock python as well. Aggressive Rock Python was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in South Florida in 2013.
