But why would Land Rover want to get into the Diesel business in the U.S. to begin with? In America, diesel sales represent a tiny number of passenger cars. Globally though, 50% of every Land Rover vehicle sold is powered by a diesel engine. And in Europe this number jumps to 90%.

Fuel economy is the main reason that diesel has a chance here in the U.S. At 22 MPG in the city and 29 MPG in the highway, the Td6 model blows away all other models in terms of gas mileage. Under the hood is a turbocharged 3.0 liter V-6 diesel engine that makes 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft. of torque. The amount of torque is available below 2000 RPM which allows you to access the torque while off-road.
