At least 15 volunteer security officers have been killed by an attack on a checkpoint in the south of Thailand. Five others were wounded in the assault late on Tuesday evening. Police say some of the attackers may also have been hurt in an exchange of gunfire. It was the worst single attack in the region in years. The insurgency in Thailand's three southernmost provinces has killed about seven thousand people since 2004. Police in Thailand suspect Muslim separatists to be behind the latest killings.
