American defense secretary Jim Mattis has resigned over president Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Syria. The 4-star marine general has been defense secretary since Trump took office. In his resignation letter Mattis said:"My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues. Mattis said he was resigning "Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects." Reports indicate Mattis resigned after a last-ditch attempt to persuade the president to reverse his decision on Syria. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders denied suggestions that Trump had asked Mattis to resign.
