Don’t LOOK now! Did you SEE that? Have you WATCHED it? What are the differences between watch, look, and see? Is there a difference between ‘I saw the puppy’, ‘I watched the puppy’, and ‘I looked at the puppy?’ Learn English answers to all these questions and more in this lesson!

Would you like to know the differences between the commonly confused English words watch, look, and see? In today’s English lesson you’re going to learn exactly when to use watch, when to use look, and when to use see.

Some quick points from this English vocabulary lesson about Watch, Look, and See:

Watch: Watch is used for things that we spend a longer time focusing our eyes and attention on. When we use watch, the item we’re watching is usually moving. We watch videos, movies, people, sports.

Look: Look is usually used for an intermediate period of time of our focused attention with our eyes on something. When we use look, the item we’re looking at isn’t usually moving. We look at pictures and items when we’re shopping. We often tell people to look at something. We also have the English expression ‘don’t look now, but…’

See: See is mostly used when we quickly notice something. When see is used this way we have the common English expression, ‘did you see that?' We use see to discuss the ability to use our eyes for sight.

Informally speaking we also use see to talk about leaving your house to watch something. This is why choosing between watch or see can be especially difficult. If you want to invite someone to watch a movie at the cinema, you might ask them ‘would you like to see a movie together’. In that situation you could say, ‘would you like to watch a movie’, but when going somewhere to watch something, native English speakers prefer to use ‘see’.
