Aaliyah will forever be remembered as "The Princess of R&B." She was poised for a long and bright career, but then in 2001 she tragically died in a plane crash at the age of 22. Here's what the last 12 months of her life were like.

Aaliyah's popularity was growing at the turn of the twentieth century, as she translated the momentum of her music career onto the silver screen. In 2000, she made her acting debut alongside Jet Li in the action film Romeo Must Die. She was praised for her performance, while her song from the movie, "Try Again," earned her a Grammy nomination, won her two MTV Video Music Awards, and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Transitioning into acting was something that Aaliyah had wanted for a very long time. As she revealed in an interview with CBS,

"Since I was little, I started in singing, I did acting, I danced, I did plays. In high school I took a bit of drama, but music was first."

Aaliyah was clearly excited about what her career had in store for her, but alas, her untimely passing prematurely ended what could've otherwise been an incredibly fruitful onscreen career.
