Spring Forward, Fall Back! It’s almost time to change the clocks again. In Canada every year, twice a year we move the clocks ahead one hour and then set the clocks back one hour. This is called Daylight Saving Time. But why do we do Daylight Saving Time? In today’s English lesson you’re going to learn all about Daylight Saving Time by learning the answers to some of the most common questions about Daylight Saving Time, and improving your English vocabulary.

What is Daylight Saving Time?: Daylight Saving Time is the practice of changing the time in order to gain more hours of daylight during the warmer months, and then returning the time back during the colder months. Every year we change the clocks ahead one hour in the spring to get an extra hour of daylight. Then in the fall we change the clocks backwards one hour to return to the regular time.

When is Daylight Saving Time in Canada?: In Canada Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am on the second Sunday in March. This is when the clocks will move ahead an hour in an effort to get more daylight. Then at 2am on the first Sunday in November the clocks will move backwards an hour. This is where we get the expression “Spring Forward, Fall Back.”

Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Savings Time?: The correct expression for this event is Daylight Saving Time, however a lot of native English speakers often put an S at the end. So despite the fact that this observation is called “Daylight Saving Time”, in Canada you will still hear quite a few people say, “Daylight Savings Time.”

Does everywhere in Canada do Daylight Saving Time?: Actually, no. Not everywhere in Canada still participates in Daylight Saving Time. Both the province of Saskatchewan and the territory of Yukon no longer change their clocks. There has also been lots of discussion about abolishing the use of Daylight Saving Time in other areas of Canada as well. In fact, there is much criticism of Daylight Saving Time and many Canadians want to see Daylight Saving Time become obsolete. This English lesson will talk about some of the pros and cons of Daylight Saving Time.
