Cameron Highlands is one of the most popular highland retreats in Malaysia. What makes Cameron Highland so special is its quaint charm. Cameron Highlands was discovered by a British government surveyor , William Cameron ,in 1885, and was named after him. Cameron Highlands become an important area when it was found suitable for planting tea, and it remains the biggest tea producer in Malaysia till today.
The reason most Malaysians go to Cameron Highlands is undoubtedly its cool environment, usually a refreshing change from Malaysia’s hot and humid weather.
Another attraction of Cameron Highlands is its famous tea plantations. Notable places are Boh Tea Centre and Sg Palas Plantation, both operated by Boh, Malaysia’s biggest black tea producer. Besides experiencing what it’s like to be in a tea plantation and tea factory, the place also has a café where you can enjoy a nice afternoon tea while enjoying the breathtaking view . Other than that, Cameron Highlands also grows roses, strawberries and cactus which are rarely found anywhere else in Malaysia. So it is definitely worthwhile to drop by and have a look. Other interesting places of note include a honey bee farm and a butterfly farm. Cameron Highlands also hosts a number of vegetable farms where you can see fresh vegetables being grown and harvested.
Besides its various farms and attractions, Cameron Highlands district is home to eight towns, some which are quite developed, so there’s always something to do. There are hotels and commercial centres in the towns to accommodate visitors.
Visitors who are interested in the indigenous people of Malaysia should definitely take note of the Orang Asli population found around Cameron Highlands. Their quaint villages consist of small wooden huts built in or near the forest. Sometimes, these natives are found along the roads, selling flowers and other goods in stalls to supplement their income. Although some of the villages can be seen from the main road, there are also many more found deep inside the forest. Interested visitors who wish to find out more about the native’s way of life can enlist the services of a guide to visit the hidden settlements.
