US media and an unnamed official in Washington say the US called off a planned operation to attack Iranian targets in retaliation for the downing of an American Navy drone. The reports say US forces were in position to strike Iranian radar and missile batteries when the operation was called off. According to the New York Times, US President Trump approved air strikes on Iran, but then abruptly called them off on Friday night. Iran and the US have offered conflicting accounts of where the Global Hawk drone was shot down. Iran says it has evidence the drone violated Iranian airspace. The US denies that. The tensions have prompted many airlines to divert flights from flying above the region.
