In the Turkish city of Istanbul, police fired tear at demonstrators taking part in a march for International Women's Day that had been banned by authorities. Demonstrations have not been permitted in Turkey since a coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016, but thousands of women gathered at the city's central Taksim Square for this protest. Police pushed back another group of women at the entrance to Istanbul's main shopping street, Istiklal Caddesi. Many of the protesters were demanding the release of women who have been imprisoned in Syria since the Syrian Civil War began.
