The TOEFL speaking section is weird. It's weird for a lot of reasons. However, one reason why it's weird is that you have to speak for exactly 45 seconds. No matter what the question, no matter what your opinion may be, you have to speak for 45 seconds.

That's weird. And difficult.

In this second lesson of the "TOEFL Speaking Section is Weird" series, founder of Vocabulary Ninja and head teacher at TOEFL Speaking Teacher, Josh MacPherson, discusses the structure of an independent speaking response and how to make sure you fill all 45 seconds with a response.

Most students know that they have to give a personal example for the independent speaking questions to help extend the time. However, it's better to stop thinking about personal examples and instead start thinking about stories. Don't discuss an example, tell a story and you will find that you can easily speak for 45 seconds.
