Elevators have been around for thousands of years, but the invention of mechanical elevators run by steam or electricity revolutionized how people are transported, allowing for far more people to be moved up or down at once. At that in turn exponentially increased the possibility for loss of life in the case of a malfunction.

Tragically, there have been numerous elevator disasters over the past two centuries that have taken dozens, and even hundreds, of lives. From horrifying mining disasters and construction accidents to the terrible events in New York's Twin Towers on 9/11, these are the world's deadliest elevators.
