But have you ever traveled through a tunnel that's floating underwater? Of course, you haven't because such tunnels haven't been built yet! However, the first of its kind might soon appear in Norway!

SUMMARY:
- The western coast of Norway is made up of more than 1,000 fjords, which are long and narrow sea bays snaking between high cliffs. Naturally, it's a stunning view, but can you imagine the headache of traveling along such a coast?
- It's going to be the world's first underwater tunnel floating in the Norwegian Sea. It’s a pretty costly project with a $40 billion price tag.
- The future rock tunnel is expected to be the longest and deepest in the world. It will be drilled at a depth of 1,286 ft (392 m), and its length will reach 17 miles (27 km).
- According to preliminary plans, there might be several floating tunnels across different fjords on the way from Trondheim to Kristiansand. Each tunnel will go through the bedrock on both sides of the fjord.
- Right now, more than 50 experts from all over the world are studying currents, bedrock geology, wind speed, and even the probability of undersea landslides in the area.
- The 35-mile-long (56 km) Gotthard Base Tunnel runs under the Swiss Alps at a whopping 8,000 feet (2,440 m) below sea level, which makes it also the world's deepest traffic tunnel.
- 6-mile-long (9.7 km) SMART is nothing like your ordinary road tunnel. After tropical rains and storms, the tunnel can be completely flooded, which helps to get rid of all the water.
- Interestingly, Norway already houses the world's longest road tunnel, the Lærdal Tunnel. It's cut through the mountains that lie between Oslo and Bergen and makes the way from one point to the other much safer and faster.
- Nine-mile-long (14.5 km) Tokyo Bay Aqua Line is a bridge-tunnel combination that connects Kawasaki, Kanagawa to Kisarazu, Chiba. This bridge-tunnel has reduced the time it takes drivers to get to their destination from 90 to 15 minutes!
- Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado is one of the highest tunnels in the world. It's located at a height of 11,158 ft (3,400 m) above sea level, which is the highest tunnel for vehicles in the US.
