The older generations would surely recall the welcoming tingling call of the cycling ting ting candyman on his rounds in the neighbourhood. Nowadays this old tradesman is a rare sight indeed in any city. Luckily an encounter was in sight and this video follows his ting ting echoes. Here he is seen at daytime in Pudu. A conversation reveals that he is from Bahau and has been in this trade selling "mark ka tong" or malt candy for 30 years, taking over from his father. He claims that he is probably the only authentic "mark ka tong" ting ting candyman left around. Surprisingly he is still using the two-piece instrument that he inherited from his Cheah-family grandmother who was from China. These 100+ year old instrument are used to create the familiar ting ting sound. The original malt candy, hard and uneven, is chiseled into small pieces with the two-piece instrument on his round tray. Then he sells each pack at RM2. He is the only one who sells the authentic "bamboo stick " soft candy, twirled to form a soft ball, wrapped in plastic and shaped to form a candy strip on a stick.
He sells other sweets too in a choice of flavours ranging from ginger, sour plum, wheatgrass and mint.
In the evenings he moves around crowded places to ply his sweet temptations. However, he does not follow a fixed schedule of stops. You will only find him if you are lucky ! It's amazing to be able to witness this century old trade surviving in modern times, what more in Malaysia. Let us all follow his ting ting call and keep the sweet memories alive !
