Muammar Gaddafi became the ruler of Libya in a 1969 coup d'etat when he was just 27 years old. What followed was more than 40 years of human rights abuses, sabre-rattling and showy displays of opulence. He even forced Libyan citizens, by law, to carry his book, known as the "Green Book," with them at all times.

Gaddafi's rule finally came to an end in 2011, when Libyans, inspired by revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, took to the streets in protest. Gaddafi used violence in an attempt to quell the uprising, which led to UN-sanctioned military action.
