In 1972, a serial killer stalked Northern California, but he wasn't killing for fun : he believed that his murder spree would prevent a devastating earthquake. The killer, Herbert Mullin, would murder 13 people before his spree was complete, with few of his victims being premeditated. In his mind, human sacrifice was needed to stop a greater tragedy, and with the death toll in the Vietnam War tapering off, it was his job to make up the difference.

Mullin is still incarcerated today. This is the story of the serial killer who tried to prevent earthquakes.
