‘Awara’ is one of the most significant movies made in the history of Indian cinema. Though Raj Kapoor had earlier made ‘Aag’ & ‘Barsaat’, it was ‘Awara’ that he conceived & shot in his own RK Studio. ‘Awara’ featured 3 generations of the Kapoors – Dewan Basheshwaranath Kapoor (Raj Kapoor’s grand-father), father Prithviraj Kapoor & Raj Kapoor himself with younger brother Shashi Kapoor (who played the junior Raj Kapoor in the film). The chemistry between Raj Kapoor & Nargis was one of the firsts to be seen on the silver screen. Shankar Jaikishan’s music for the movie is popular till this day which included a 9-minute dream sequence. It was the first dream sequence of Bollywood created on one of the most memorable sets created in Hindi cinema. No wonder, ‘Awara’ was India’s official entry into the 1953 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival.
