The history of the Tamil language can be divided into 3 periods:
Old Tamil, Medieval Tamil, and Modern Tamil. Also, the Tamil language varies linguistically across 3 different dimensions: geography, caste and dialects. Six regional dialects can be classified as: East, West, North, South, Central, and Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Tamil is more conservative, since it retained older features of the language.
