You may have heard of LASERs, but what about their older brother - MASERs. Invented in the 1950s, MASERs use microwaves instead of light, but they were somewhat eclipsed by the much more practical LASER. More than half a century later, researchers are demonstrating a new kind of MASER, made using diamond. Nature reporter Elizabeth Gibney went to see it in action.
