LSU Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Bryan McCann presents a talk on the intersection of race, masculinity, and criminality in public culture. He notes that the United States is the world's leading jailer and that black men are incarcerated at a disproportionately high rate. Dr. McCann argues that our learned ways of viewing black men as criminal threats have fueled an explosion in our prison population over the past three decades. He encourages citizens to be more attentive to the ways we talk about crime in everyday conversation, political discourse, and popular culture. Doing so, Dr. McCann believes, is an important step toward reforming our deeply broken criminal justice system.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
