The Familiar Roti-Man, Bread On A Motorcycle

Many of us who live in the suburbs of Malaysia should be familiar with the honking during the evening, signalling the arrival of the humble roti-man of the area (roti is Malay for bread). Driving a modified motorcycle—a vehicle fitted with a container that holds various kinds of bread and sometimes a number of different snacks, the roti-man has been the primary source of bread for many Malaysian households for a number of years now. Every day, these hardworking folks faithfully gather and collect the bread and snacks best suited for their area! Also, what’s amazing is that despite the cramped space on only their motorcycle, most of them manage to arrange them neatly on their vehicle, allowing customers to easily see and select what they desire.
The existence of the roti-men means that there is no need for families to travel out of the comfort of their own homes to buy their daily supply of bread—it gets delivered to them. In some areas, roti-men are very popular, and they need only to stop by the side of the street before having numerous residents from nearby houses swarm over them in an attempt to buy their favourite snacks.
As areas get developed and more shops appear, the roti-man is a turning into a rarer and rarer sight these days. However, their services are still very much sought after in the suburban and rural parts of Malaysia, where they still faithfully bring thousands of families their daily snacks and bread.
