The Amish as we think of them trace their roots back to the late 17th century, when the leader of a group of Mennonite Anabaptists named Jakob Ammann introduced an ideology that was heavily focused on the social shunning of “fallen” believers. By the 18th century, the Amish began to migrate to North America in search of religious freedom.
It’s here that modern day Amish continue to live life reminiscent of the old days, eschewing modern technology for a simpler way of doing things. But this quaint community has a whole host of issues that range from drinking, to pollution, and even genetic disorders. This is the dark side of Amish Country.
