On April 26, 1986, the worst case scenario of nuclear power was realized as the colloquially-named Chernobyl nuclear power plant had a catastrophic failure. The meltdown led to the deaths of possibly thousands as radiation seeped out from the plant into a nearby town, but the event's tragedies couldn't possibly be measured simply by the number of deaths. It was an event that would go down in history as an avoidable disaster.
