In a landmark first for Asia, Taiwan's parliament has legalized same-sex marriage. The bill allows same-sex couples full legal marriage rights, including in areas such as taxes, insurance and child custody. It followed a long debate and a referendum in which same-sex marriage was rejected by voters. Put forward by the government, the bill also survived attempts by conservatives to pass a watered-down version that would have removed any reference to marriage from the law. Despite the outcome of today's vote, the issue of same-sex marriage continues to divide the country.
