Can bats and dolphins see? Are they really blind? Animals like dolphins and bats have developed the ability to use echolocation to determine where objects are in dark spaces. This allows the animals to move around in pitch darkness, so they can navigate, hunt, identify friends and enemies, and avoid obstacles. To echolocate, bats and dolphins send out sound waves from the mouth or forehead, when the sound waves hit an object they produce echoes, the echo bounces off the object and returns back to the bats and dolphins.
