What’s the difference between SOME, ANY, and NONE? Let me give you ‘some’ information about these words so you won’t have ‘any’ problems! When should you use some, when should you use any, and when should you use none? How do you use some, any, and none in English? In today’s English grammar lesson you will learn the answers to all these questions and more!
SOME:
Some is used in two many ways and goes before a plural noun or an uncountable noun.
1) Some is used in positive sentences: I’d like to eat some ice cream. My friend gave me some flowers.
2) Some is also used to make polite requests and ask for favours: Could you please open the window? Would you mind lending me some money?
ANY:Any is used in four main ways
Any is used in questions with plural or uncountable nouns:
1) Does he have any time to get together this weekend? Do you have any pets?
2) Any is also used in negative sentences (look for the word not): She doesn’t have any friends. I can’t eat any bread.
3) In addition, any is used in sentences that have a positive sentence structure, but a negative meaning. These types of sentences use the words: ‘without,’ ‘hardly,’ ‘rarely,’ and ‘never.’: He never has any time to hang out. I’ve hardly lost any weight.
4) Any can also be used with a singular noun to show if there are possible choices, that all of those choices are okay, any of those choices are fine: Any restaurant you want to go to is okay. You can order any drink you want.
SOME vs ANY Grammar Tip:
Any can also be used when asking questions to people who are close to you when you are sure their answer will be yes. You use any instead of some to show a closeness and politeness towards the other person: Would you like some help? Do you want some tea?
NONE:
None is a one word answer to a ‘how much’ or ‘how many’ question: Q: How much money do you have? A: None
ANY vs NONE Grammar Tip:
When the answer to a how much or how many question is negative you can use any in a full sentence or just the short word none and either could have the same meaning in your conversation: Q: How many people went to the party? A: “There weren’t any people at the party.” or simple “None.”
