In this lesson you will learn the following 8 simple past sentence structures for making the simple past:

1. Positive Simple Past Sentences: Subject + Past tense verb + Object. (To put verbs in simple past, add -ed for regular verbs, memorize irregular verbs)EX: We went to a Japanese festival. He played an instrument. I drank green tea.
2. Positive Simple Past Sentences with the “Be” Verb: Subject + Was / Were + Object. EX: The Japanese festival was fun. The dancers were amazing. The Japanese festival was in Mississauga.
3. Negative Simple Past Sentences: Subject + Did not / Didn’t + Base verb + Object. (Did is an auxiliary verb. When you use auxiliary verbs, the main verb is always in the base form, don’t change the main verb to the simple past) EX: They did not swim. We didn’t sleep.
4. Negative Simple Past Sentences with the “Be” Verb: Subject + Was / Were + Not + Object. EX: The Japanese festival wasn’t close to our house. They weren't Canadian dancers.
5. Simple Past Yes/ No Questions: Did + Subject + Past Verb + Object? EX: Did you eat? Did they dance?
6. Simple Past WH Questions: WH + Did + Subject + Past Verb + Object? EX: How much did I eat? What did you do?
7. Simple Past “Be” Verb Yes/ No Questions: Was / Were + Subject + Past Verb + Object? EX: Was the Japanese festival interesting? Were the dancers good?
8. Simple Past “Be” Verb WH Questions: WH + Was / Were + Subject + Past Verb + Object? EX: Where were the dancers from? Who was the singer?
* Remember: Simple Past is used to talk about actions that are completely done / finished in the past and you know when the action happened. If the action started in the past and and is still happening or if you don’t know when the action happened, then you need to use Present Perfect tense, not Simple Past tense.
