Diving at the Doc DeMilly shipwreck was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in Florida, Aug. 2015. I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to everyone at the SilentWorld Dive Center of Key Largo, in particular to general manager Andrew Brailsford for coordinating the dive. A special THANKS goes to tech diver Jeff Anastas for his assistance and guidance, which made this video possible.
The Doc DeMilly is a 287-foot steel freighter and lays 150 feet deep underwater. It is located .25 mile east of the Pacific Reef Lighthouse of the South Miami coast. Interesting about its sinking is, that it was done by the Air Force in 1986. The Air Force staged an attack on this ship to simulate what may have occurred in war time, dropping concrete bombs with remote-controlled charges.
The ship remained intact and managed to avoid damage in 1992 during Hurricane Andrew. It will take multiple deep dives to explore all of the wreck. This is an advanced dive site due to its max depth of 150 feet as well as the ability to penetrate the entire wreck. Goliath groupers, many species of sharks and barracudas frequent this site and share the shipwreck with a variety of marine life. Because of its distance from Miami and the Keys, the site is not as heavily frequented by dive operations and remained more pristine than other Florida shipwrecks. Offering great opportunities for underwater film & photography.
