The results of a public consultation on road safety will be presented at a conference on December 2, 2009 in Brussels. They will serve as a basis for defining the future road safety action plan 2011-2020. In conjunction with this conference, 3 info clips are available to illustrate recent research and innovation in the road safety field. This clip covers the innovations that will make our vehicles safer. Features such as electronic stability control, daytime running lights and blind-spot mirrors are soon to be mandatory in Europe’s vehicles. However, in a few years' time our cars and trucks will probably also be fitted with a pedestrian airbag, an impact-resistant windscreen, a sandwich-structure bonnet, a route surveillance system and a brake-assist system. The new developments also focus on information. Inspired by the system that rates the energy performance of household appliances, a new European tyre labelling system will give consumers details on a tyre's fuel performance before purchase.
